Our first trip in our new Roadtrek Zion was to Starved Rock State Park near Utica Illinois. Starved Rock is our favorite go-to park for a quick camping getaway. We have fond memories of our first hiking trips here, when we were dating long ago.
Because of a thunderstorm that was threatening the area, we took a detour on the way there. We drove an hour north of the storm and spent some time hiking at Castle Rock and White Pines Forest State Parks. The parks were deserted during the week, so we had the trails all to ourselves, except for those pesky mosquitoes. Oh well, it’s nothing that a little Benadryl gel can’t fix!
When we arrived at Starved Rock, we were thrilled with the beauty of our campsite. With the new Zion, we find that we can fit in any spot and get away with only an electrical connection. This lets us enjoy private wooded sites. Staying at state parks instead of private campgrounds has reinforced our belief that the cheaper the camping, the better the campsite.
We hiked at Starved Rock and Matthiesen State Parks the next day. People were generally respectful of social distancing rules. Unfortunately, some of the trails were closed due to the heavy rains making them dangerously muddy, but the lush greenery made up for the inconvenience.
