How to Make a Police Box Dice Tower out of Foam Board

A dice tower made to look like a blue police boxAs I stated in my last story, A Roll of the Dice, I really like dice towers. My daughter Rose the Ranger does as well. When she saw how well my castle dice tower turned out, she asked if I would make a police box dice tower for her.

As with the castle dice tower, I started with the generic foam dice tower from Instructables online.

By making a few alterations to this pattern, I was able to make a police box dice tower for a couple of dollars.

Materials
  • Sheet of foam board from dollar store (not from craft store)
  • White glue
  • toothpicks
  • 1 sheet of sticky-back felt
  • Thin Cardboard or posterboard
  • Transparency film
  • Craft supplies like scissors, utility knife, and glue gun
Directions

1. Print out the pattern from the link above and review the directions on the Instructables site.

2. Following the instructions on that site, cut out and assemble the dice tower through step 4 of the tutorial on that site.

3. Paint the inside of the tower, bright yellow metallic gold, as shown in this finished view. It is much easier to paint the inside at this point than to wait until later.

4. Continue to assemble the dice tower through Step 6 of the Instructables tutorial. Skip adding the felt and add glue the Tray Front on as in Step 7.

5. Now it’s time to make the windows you will need. Here is a pdf containing the windows of the box. Print out this sheet on transparency film. If you don’t have transparency film, you could print this on regular paper, if you wanted. Cut out some of these windows for use in decorating the police box leaving 1/2″ room around them. (Extra ones are provided in case your goof up cutting like I always do.)

6. Using a picture of a famous police box as reference, cut strips to add to the outside of your dice tower as shown. (Note that the police box extends all the way to the bottom and not onto the tray part).

7. Before trimming around the windows, glue a plastic transparency window piece on. Glue it along the outer edge so you can’t see it through the window!

8. Cut out two piece of foam board the size of the top to act as a lid. Trim a half inch all the way around one piece. Glue the two pieces together. Check the fit and adjust as needed to fit correctly on top.

9. Paint the tower and lid with bright blue paint. Paint the inside of the tray with black paint. I added a light coat of washed down black paint, so it didn’t look too new. (She’s ancient, you know.)

10. Let it dry thoroughly. Find a picture of outer space online and print out some color pictures that you can glue to the tray part to make it look likes it’s spinning in space.

11. Print out the signs in this pdf on thick paper. Adjust the scaling of the printout as needed to fit on your tower. Cut them out and glue them along the top and on the front.

12. Finish with a coat of varnish for added protection.

13. Add felt on the inside as shown in the Instructable tutorial.

14. To dress it up, I decided to add a piece of felt on the bottom too. It makes it look more finished and hides any errant paint marks.

15. To add the light on top of the box, you will have to hunt around at a hobby shop to find a bead or other doodad that has the look you want. I fastened mine on with wire, but you may be able to hot glue yours.

Rose the Ranger loved her police box dice tower. I think it would be doctor-approved!
