For our June getaway, we decided to focus on some of Wisconsin’s many beautiful state parks. One of our favorite weekend trips is Door County in Wisconsin. This peninsula off of Lake Michigan is only four hours from Chicago and is home to several spectacular parks.

As we had made last minute plans, the campgrounds were rather full, so we split our trip across two campgrounds.  This is one of our favorite parts of owning a Class B. Setup and tear down take less than 5 minutes, so you can hop from one campground to another with ease.

We fill up our fresh water tank before we leave home and only need an electric hookup at night.  When we get to our campground site, we park, plug in, and are done.  In the morning, we simply unplug and are on the road in minutes. What freedom!

The first night we spent at Point Beach State Forest, part-way up to the Door. After an early morning hike, we drove the final hour to Potawatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay. We hiked some of the trails in the park before heading out to Whitefish Dunes State Park and Cave Point County Park. After a full day of camping, we were ready to pull into our campsite and enjoy an evening around the campfire.

Our experience was that during the week, the hiking trails were relatively empty and the hikers we encountered were respectful of social distancing.  After spending a few minutes at Cave Point County Park, however, we decided to leave as the beach-goers were not following safety recommendations.  That park is one of our favorites but we will have to catch it on a future trip!

The next day we drove up the scenic route to Peninsula State Park. This park has many great hiking and biking trails, but could use some more parking lots. Luckily, there were no problems finding parking with our Roadtrek Zion.

We avoided the antique shops and restaurants in Door County, but decided to stop for a treat at Not Licked Yet, an outdoor ice cream shop in Fish Creek. It had been years since I had enjoyed a Door County Sundae. (Vanilla ice cream, cherry pie filling, hot fudge, and pecans!)

On our next trip to Door County, we hope to get a site at one of the many campgrounds at Peninsula State Park. These sites book up quickly as they are large and wooded, while being close to the popular towns of Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Sister Bay.
